Research director Susanne Rostmark tests iron pellets at LKAB lab in Arctic Sweden


Swedish mining giant LKAB's Research director Susanne Rostmark tests fossil-free iron pellets at her lab in Arctic Sweden.

She is examining how using hydrogen to extract iron impacts the strength and shape of the pellets. 

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) is a government owned Swedish mining company. The company mines iron ore at Kiruna and at Malmberget in northern Sweden. The company was established in 1890, and has been 100% state-owned since the 1950s. The iron ore is processed to pellets and sinter fines, which are transported by Iore trains (Malmbanan) to the harbours at Narvik and Luleå and to the steelmill at Luleå (SSAB).

LKAB is transforming to fossil-free iron-making with the HYBRIT green steel initiative.

With HYBRIT technology, LKAB aims to be the first mining company in the world to use hydrogen technology to bring fossil-free sponge iron to the market already in 2026 and largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from their own operations in around 2030.

Due to continued mining, the underground hole will expand towards the city, making the city unsafe to live in. The company and municipal government is relocating the city in a multi-decade transforamtion project.
