CHINA-GARBAGE

Migrants work on a garbage dump in Beijing, the Chinese capital...Between 50-100 Chinese from a small village in southwestern China's Sichuan province live and work here, one thousand miles away from home. They are part of a cooperative selling scraps and wastes to local farmers and factories...They look for bits of wire, bottles and plastics that they can re-sell. They earn about 300 yuan (US$36) a month per person, which is low by urban standards but is about 10 times as much as wages at home in Sichuan....Picture taken March 1999.Copyright Justin Jin
